Welcome to Adopted Lens, my monthly newsletter dedicated to the journey of self-discovery through photography.
If you’ve been here before, you may have noticed my absence over the past few months. Well, I’m back, and I want to take this opportunity to properly reintroduce myself. They say you only get one chance to make a first impression, but I’ve never put much stock in what “they” say—so here goes nothing.
My name is Bryan Brock and I recently celebrated my 45th birthday in the stunning desert landscapes of Arizona—a dream destination for any photographer (or golfer). But here’s the thing: I didn’t bring my camera (but I did bring my golf clubs).
I know what you’re thinking—what kind of photographer visits a place like Arizona and doesn’t bring their camera? The truth is, I was teetering on the edge of creative burnout. So, for once, I made the conscious decision to experience the moment without the pressure of capturing it. No expectations, no compositions—just the freedom to simply be.
That space gave me time to reflect, as milestone birthdays tend to do. Allowing myself to quietly celebrate my accomplishments (which I’ve been told I don’t do enough of), while wholeheartedly embracing my failures.
During that period of reflection, I realized that at this point in my life, the majority of my audience only knows me as a “photographer”.
“Although photography is something I do—it’s not who I am.”
The truth is, I am so much more than a title. I’ve noticed that too often, (especially as we get older) we let our careers define us, as if our worth is tied to a job description. Although photography may not be my full-time career, I’ve held many other job titles over the years: Graphic Designer, Creative Director, Entrepreneur, College Professor, Mentor, Community Leader, DJ, Event Producer, Promoter, Fashion Designer, Host, Public Speaker, Board Member, Director, and the list goes on.
“But at my core, I am—and always will be—an artist first. Creating is not just what I do; it’s who I am.”
So, as I step back into this space, I’m doing it with a fresh perspective. I’m excited to continue this journey, to share more of my personal story, and to explore my creativity without limits. If this resonates with you, I hope you’ll stick around to see what’s next!
Peace,
Photo Of The Month
This month’s “Photo Of The Month” is a quick snap I took (with someone else’s camera) while I was in Cuba during a location scout back in 2017.

After almost a year of consistent YouTube creation, I took a 4-month break—and I’ve learned so much in the process. In this video, I open up about the challenges of juggling a full-time job, being a husband and father, and maintaining a social life while creating content. I’ll share the lessons I’ve learned about balance, burnout, and reconnecting with my purpose as a creator. Whether you’re a fellow YouTuber or just trying to balance life’s demands, this video is for you. Let’s normalize stepping back to move forward.
